Build a Green Home!

You have designed and planned everything down to the last detail. You have picked the perfect community, whether it’s Kings Heights in Airdrie, or Crystal Landing in Grande Prairie. Now, before you get to work with your home builder to construct that dream home of yours, here are a few tricks on how to make your home a bit more green.

Materials: whenever possible, try to find natural, recycled or reclaimed materials.  Ensure that any natural materials are from a sustainable resource.  Look for materials that have a low “embodied energy” meaning the amount of energy required to manufacture them.  Also, be considerate of where your materials come from.  The closer to home they are manufactured, the less energy required to transport them.

Energy:  when building your home, explore renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power, a combined heat and power.  For a more inexpensive change, you can double glaze your window for better insulation, and install insulation in your roof and cavity walls.

Lighting and Appliances: if you are going to make your home “green” be sure to consider all the different elements within your home.  Energy efficient appliances may cost more at first, but will save you more money on electricity in the end.  Also, be sure to review all your electronics and entertainment sources you use.  A plasma screen television is an electricity hog.  Do not forget to update your light bulbs to more efficient models, and always turn off the lights when you leave the room.

With these tips, you can not only love your new home that you have just built, but you will be able to have peace of mind that you are doing your part to be environmentally friendly, while saving some money along the way.
